Marist Community & Continuing Education

Marist High School is offering classes for adults and children to continue their education. We offer various classes that will continue to grow based on public opinion. A description of the courses being offered this session along with their cost can be found in this brochure.

Registration: In person, by fax or email.  Registration form can be found at the end of this brochure.  Class sizes are limited.  Registration is on a first come first serve basis.  A student will not be considered enrolled until all fees are paid.  Cash, check, money order or credit cards are accepted.

Cost and Course Cancellations: Tuition fees are listed in this brochure.  The school reserves the right to cancel any class for which there is insufficient enrollment at no cost to the student.  Refunds will be granted for any cancelled classes.  Requests for a refund or class change must be done one week before a class is scheduled to begin.  A $10.00 cancellation fee will be charged for all refunds.

Child Care:  Child care will be provided on weeknights at a cost of $5.00 per child while student is attending class.  The cost can be paid in full at time of registration or in cash each night as needed. Child Care Supervisor:  Mrs. Kathy DePoalo

Parking:  Marist has a parking lot on the side of the school for student parking.  The spaces are on a first come first serve basis and may be limited when other school activities are in session.

Books & Supplies: Books/supplies will be distributed to the students where applicable.  Students will be advised either in this brochure on the first day of class of any supplies they need to obtain themselves.

Classes

CERTIFICATION CLASSES

 

 

  1. ECG/EKG Technician: $699                           

             Sessions: Saturdays:  October 7, 21 November 4, 18, December 16

              Hours: 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

              Prerequisite: High School Diploma/GED          

In this course, students will be taught proper 12 lead ECG placement, performance, troubleshooting technical problems.  Students will also practice application of a 24 hour Holter Monitor.  Medical terms and abbreviations applicable to electrocardiography will be taught.  Students will learn to recognize normal and abnormal ECG tracings.  Upon successful   completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association ECG Technician Test (test fee is not included in the course fee).  Instructor: Ms. Inez Kozak

  1. Phlebotomy Technician: $699                       

Sessions: Saturdays:  October 7, 21 November 4, 18, December 16

Hours: 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Prerequisite: High School Diploma/GED

 

Proof of Hepatitis B series immunization is required and due on the first day of class.

 

This course is an introduction to the methods and techniques of the phlebotomy profession.  Students will be taught the skills required to perform venipunctures and capillary sticks (finger/heel) for the purpose of drawing and processing blood samples within a health care facility or laboratory.  The course includes OSHA standards, aseptic technique, applicable medical terminology, clinical and laboratory skills.  During the clinical laboratory sessions, students will perform the venipuncture and capillary techniques on a manikin arm.  Additionally, students will be required to perform 30 human draws according to OSHA standards.  Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association Phlebotomy Technician Test (test fee not included in course fee).  Instructor: Ms. Roxann D’Alessio

  1. American Heart CPR/AED Certification:  $75   per session. 

Sessions: Select One:   Wednesday, October 11, Thursday October 19, Wednesday November 1, Wednesday November 29, or Tuesday December 7

Hours: 6:00 – 9:00pm.

 The course is designed for anyone interested in becoming CPR certified or who needs it for their employment.  No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.  The course will help prepare students to perform CPR on adults, children and infants and to use the automated external defibrillator (AED).  Additionally, participants will learn first aid and how to respond in emergency situations.  Wear comfortable clothing and bring a pillow to kneel on when practicing on manikins.  Instructor:  Ms. Inez Kozak
 
 
 
  1. CPR: For Family and Friends   $36.00   per session

November 16

Hours: 6:30 – 8:30pm   

Participants in this course will learn how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on adults and children.  The topics that will be taught include: hands only CPR, AED, CPR with breaths and AED usage in special circumstances.  Students will practice CPR on manikins and will receive an American Heart Association card indicating successful completion.  Those attending will also receive a manual and a face shield for future reference and use.  Wear comfortable clothing.  This CPR course in recommended for non-health care workers.  THIS IS AN ORIENTAION TO CPR, IT IS NOT A CERTIFING OR CREDENTAILING COURSE.  Instructor: Ms. Inez Kozak
 
 
 
  1. Pet CPR:         $59.00   per session                                     

Sessions: Select One:  Tuesday October 12, Wednesday November 15

Hours: 6:00 – 9:00 pm     

This class is a must for pet parents, dog walkers, and cat sitters.  The class is taught by a Certified Pet CPR Instructor.  Students will learn pet first aid and how to perform CPR on dogs and cats (manikins are used).  At the successful completion of the class, students will receive a CPR card and a reference manual.    Instructor:  Inez Kozak

 

 

LANGUAGES

 

  1. Italian for Beginners $399,  Ten Sessions                              

Sessions: Wednesdays:   October 4, 11, 18, 25 November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 December 6

6:30 – 8:30pm

 In this lively class, students will learn to speak and discover a second language.  The class will focus on pronunciation and writing Italian.  If you are a traveler or just want to learn another language, this course will help you improve your communication.   Classes will run for 10 consecutive Wednesdays beginning on October 4th

 

 

  1. Spanish for Beginners $399 , Ten Sessions                            

Choice of 2 Sessions:

Session 1A – Saturdays: October 7, 14, 21, 28, November 4, 11, 18, December 2, 9, 16  10:00 – 12:00 noon.

Session 1B – Wednesdays: October 4, 11, 18, 25 November 1, 8, 15 December 6, 13, 20 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Spanish is one of the most important world languages.  In this exciting class, students will focus on oral and written expression, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.  The instructor will create dialogue exercises that will help students converse.  If you are a recreational traveler, need to learn for business, or if you simply want to learn another language this is the course for you.  Instructor: Ms. Rosamary Almanzar, M.S.

Community Learning for Children and Adults

 

  1. The Foundations of Realism$499                                                         

Sessions: Wednesdays:  October 4, 11, 18, and 25 November 1, 8, 15

 Do you want to act?  Do you want to gain confidence speaking in front of crowds? This thirteen week course is designed for both. Tap into your power of imagination and memory in this acting class for all levels.  You will learn step-by-step progression of acting and moment -to-moment interplay that will develop the actor’s ability. Each student will recreate a character from a realistic play presenting a scene with intentions, obstacles and conflict.  Students will receive individualized attention as well as integrated group work.  Come, unleash your inner artist and gain confidence.    Registered students must email the instructor prior to the start of class for further information/ instructions/trigarraty@gmail.com

  1. Yoga Fit:    $99.00,  6 sessions                                                

Sessions:  Tuesdays:   October 3, 10 and 24, November 7, 14 and 28

7:00 – 8:00 pm.

Age and ability do not mater in this Yoga Fit class, virtually anyone can join.  The instructor modifies bases on individual limitations.  The class will focus on relaxation, deep breathing, refocusing, flows, poses and more.  Bring your own yoga mat and a bottle of water, (yoga straps are optional), for an hour of relaxation.

10. SAT/ACT/PSAT PREP CLASSES:  $199,  6 sessions                           

Sessions: Saturdays:  October 14, 21, and 28, November 4, 11 and 18

9:00am – 1:00pm

The SAT and ACT generally test the same type of content and are used by colleges to determine admissions and merit based scholarships.  The ACT has one science section that tests the student’s critical thinking.  This course is designed to teach reasoning skills and to prepare the student in critical reading and writing.  Students will practice the skills essential to take the SAT/ACT or PSAT.

11. Creative Writing and Publishing: $225, 10 Sessions                    

Sessions: Thursdays:  October 7, 21, November 4, 18 December 2, 16 January 6, 20 February 3, 17 10:00am – 1:00pm

Every person is the author of their own story that needs to be told.  In this class, students will learn the basics of creative writing across three genres: fiction, poetry and memoir.  In this interactive workshop student’s writing is read, discussed and studied to fine tune and enhance the work.  The class will engage in a critical discussion of assigned readings of poetry, fiction, and memoir.  The students will also participate in class writing, guided exercises and basic instruction.  Additionally, students will learn how to write a query letter and will have the opportunity to submit works to John J. Tyler Publishing LLC.

12. Excel: $199, 5 Sessions                                                                     

Sessions: Tuesdays:  October 3, 10, 24, November 7, 14

In this introduction to excel class, students will learn how to create and modify worksheets, create charts, the basics of Word and more.  Students are required to bring a laptop to class.

13. Video Game Creation for Tweens ages 11 to 15 only: $199,  5 Sessions         

Sessions: Saturdays:  October 7, 14, 21, 28 November 4

9:am – 11:am

Students bring their own laptop to this fun and interesting class.  This hands on class is interactive, exciting and ultimately fulfilling when the youngsters create their own video games. The instructor will guide and help each student with his/her game.  Class size is limited and proof of child’s age is required.

14. Zumba: $99.00 $99 5 Sessions                                         

Sessions: Wednesdays:  October 11, 18, 25 November 1, 8

7:00pm – 8:00pm

Zumba combines international and Latin music with dance moves while incorporating rhythms and resistance training.  This lively and fun class may help reduce health risks and maybe keep a few unwanted pounds at bey.  Wear comfortable clothes and bring a bottle of water and a towel.
