Quilvio J. Ventura, Jr. '12 Selected as Rotary Student of the Month for February

Quilvio J. Ventura, Jr. '12 Selected as Rotary Student of the Month for February

Quilvio J. Ventura, Jr. ’12 will represent Marist High School during the month of February as Rotary Student of the Month. Quilvio is the younger of two children born to Cruz M. Ventura and Quilvio R. Ventura, Sr.

Mr. and Mrs. Ventura immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic when Quilvio was a young boy. "When I was a little boy, I had no idea what being an American was all about. To me it was just another place to live. However, as I matured, I realized that living in this country represented freedom, economic advantage and a secure future," said Ventura.

Quilvio aspires to attend the University of Miami and major in Architecture. His road to college began when he attended St. Mary High School, Jersey City until the school closed last June. Quilvio added, "Marist ended up being a great choice for me. Everyone has been friendly and helpful. Marist offers so many opportunities for students."

Quilvio particularly enjoyed the Marist Retreat House in Esopus, NY and how he was able to meet friends from other Marist schools. When asked what excites him most for the future, Quilvio shared, "Ten years from now, I can see myself as one of the best architects in the United States, thanks to everything everyone has done for me."

Navidra Hardin '12 selected as a 2012 National Scholar by the Horatio Alger Association

Navidra Hardin '12 selected as a 2012 National Scholar by the Horatio Alger Association

The Horatio Alger Association has selected Navidra Hardin '12 as the 2012 National Scholar. Navidra was selected for this award because of his demonstrated dedication to being a community leader and individual commitment to excellence; as exemplified by remarkable achievements accomplished through honesty, hard work, self-reliance and perseverance over adversity. Members of this award must have a strong commitment in assisting those less fortunate than themselves and be willing to contribute to the mission of providing scholarships for younger generations.

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. bears the name of the renowned author Horatio Alger, Jr., whose tales of overcoming adversity through unyielding perseverance and basic moral principles captivated the public in the late 19th century.

The Association was established in 1947 to dispel the mounting belief among the nation's youth that the American Dream was no longer attainable. Through its scholarship programs, the Association encourages students to pursue their own version of the American Dream. While providing scholarship opportunities, Association Members mentor the Scholars and underscore the importance of service to others. The Members work directly to provide promising young people with the support, education and confidence needed to realize their aspirations.

When Navidra attends college, he will receive a scholarship, mentoring, and free campus housing opportunities beginning in sophomore year. Navidra is one of only 104 high school seniors nationally recognized as a Horatio Alger National Scholar.

Marist High School Receives $100,000 Grant for MEDQUEST Program

Marist High School recently received a $100,000 grant from the J.C. Kellogg Foundation for its MEDQUEST program. MEDQUEST is a medical and healthcare career exploration program that was inaugurated in September 2009. MEDQUEST is currently entering its third academic year. Ms. Roxann D'Alessio is the Program Director.

Through MEDQUEST, Marist High School continues its educational mission of serving all students; including economically disadvantaged students. Many of these students will be the first in their families to attend college. Graduates of the MEDQUEST program will be better prepared to apply for pre-medicine, nursing, pre-veterinary, pre-dentistry, and other allied health career preparation programs as college undergraduates.

MEDQUEST has an established advisory committee and its members include: Ivelisse Perez, R.N.'92, Jack McNally, D.D.S.'63, Renee Vales, R.N. '05, Angelo Alvarado, R.T.'06, Charles Gonzales, D.C. '75, Dr. Claudine Drew, led by Chairperson Michael J. Polisin, M.D.'71. Clinical experiences will include: bandaging, EKG usage, defibrillators, phlebotomy, vital signs, and bringing classroom theory into field experiences. By September 2011, the current MEDQUEST classroom will be re-constructed into a fully functioning hospital room, complete with a waiting/reception area, and examination stations for true "clinical" experiences. The remainder of the grant monies will be used for scholarship money for economically disadvantaged students and supplies. In addition, Dr. Polisin helped raised $41,000 to be used for various restricted gifts for the MEDQUEST program.

For more information on the MEDQUEST Program and Marist High School, visit www.marist.org or call 201-437-4545 x 225.

A Year of Miracles - Marist’s Class of 2011 Graduates

For the Marist graduating Class of 2011, this has been a miracle year - for a number of reasons.

From the moment the graduates, dressed in blue gowns, marched into the gym on June 4 to the processional of "Pomp and Circumstance," to the moment they left again to the playing of "Pachelbel Canon," they seemed to glow with a mood of success, as proud family members crowded the aisle to catch a glimpse of the graduates as they passed.

Their job was obvious, but so was their doubt, as members of the 54th graduating class from Marist seemed to realize for the first time that this would likely be the last time they would be here together as a class.

Click here to read the full story.

Marist Wins Big at Model United Nations by Catherine Weening '12

Members of the Model United Nations in the outisde courtyard of St. Peter's College, Jersey City, NJ

According to a survey taken by National Geographic, 63% of American young adults ages 18-24 cannot locate Iraq on a map. What’s more, educational systems are being criticized everyday for not exposing students to enough world culture and affairs. It’s a good thing Marist is different!

On March 15th and 16th, 28 Marist students, representing the countries of the United States, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, attended St. Peter’s College High School Model United Nations where they, along with students from eleven other schools, tried to find innovative, creative ways to solve the world’s many issues. From topics as broad as “Ending World Hunger” to ones as specific as “The Situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo”, students put their world knowledge, as well as their presentation skills, to the test. Marist students did not just learn more about international affairs; they also took some life lessons from the conference. “It’s amazing that people can have twenty different views on the same situation,” said sophomore Marvin Josef, remembering the rigorous debate that entailed when his committee, the U .N. Security Council, was forced to deal with a hostage crisis. However, Model U.N is an enjoyable experience as well. “It (the conference) was great!” exclaimed freshman Glen Anna Abellana “I met a lot of new people.”

Between the extensive debate, writing, and diplomatic skills needed, Model U.N. proves to be anything but easy. However, that did not stop Marist from winning five awards: Junior Luh-Anne Malagad took home the prize for Outstanding Position Paper in the U.N Commission of Narcotic Drugs, Senior Marjorie Martinez won the Best Delegate Award in the U.N. Human Rights Council, and freshman Davon Bazil and juniors Navidra Hardin and Catherine Weening won the Honorable Delegate Awards in the Disarmament and International Security Committee, the U.N. Commission for Social Development, and the U.N. Conference on the World Financial & Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Development. When asked about the awards, club moderator Mr. Thomas Murphy noted his satisfaction with this year’s results, especially since Marist took home 25% of all delegate awards. He could not help but observe that “…Marist students have proved that they can compete and excel against any other school in the state.”

Marist students to Make Paper Cranes to Rebuild Japanese Communities

On Friday, March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake struck Sendai, Japan, resulting in a devastating tsunami that ravaged the coast just 180 miles from Tokyo. In response, Students Rebuild partnered with DoSomething.org, to ensure students worldwide have a way to support their Japanese peers.

Under the leadership of Marist High School teacher, Ms. Linda Gonzalez, Marist students, faculty and administrators will help Japan by making paper cranes every day after school during the week of March 28th. These simple yet powerful gestures will trigger a $200,000 donation from the Bezos Family Foundation - $2 for each crane received - to Architecture for Humanity's reconstruction efforts in Japan. Once the goal of 100,000 submissions is reached, the cranes will be woven into an art installation - a symbolic gift not only from Marist, but also from students around the globe to Japanese youth.

Ms. Gonzalez added, “Our students never cease to amaze us. Many of them are so disadvantaged themselves, but they are always able to see that others need help as well, sometimes, even more so. They are very excited about helping others not only in our country but in other countries as well.”

Marist, the overtime king, upsets Hudson Catholic again

Preparing for overtime is a tricky situation for coaches and players for a multitude of reasons. Whether it is the coach deciding to stick to his guns or changes his team’s style of play, or if it is his players who tighten up under pressure of an entire game coming down to just four extra minutes; one thing is for certain: the game gets a lot harder from both a coach’s and a player’s perspective in an overtime period because it simply does not occur that often. That is unless it you are wearing a Marist uniform. ... read more

Marist's Williams passes 1,000 mark; happier team won by Garrett Rasko-Martinis/The Jersey Journal

Marvin Williams '11, center, with Coach Anthony Romano and the
Royal Knights Basketball Team

For Marvin Williams, senior guard for Marist High School, tonight's game against the visiting Hudson Catholic Hawks could not have gone any better.

Williams entered the game 25 points shy of the coveted 1,000-point mark, and a game-high 27 points later, he had crossed that threshold. But even more important to him, was the fact that his team pulled out a thrilling 70-67 victory in overtime over the Hawks, a team that was undefeated in the league.

"The most important thing was to come in and get the victory," he said.

"I had it in my mind from the beginning that I'd rather have the win than the 1,000 points. I knew we could win this game, but I didn't know if I could get the 1,000 points to be honest. But as long as we won I'm happy."

Marist coach Tony Romano was very proud of his team.

"It's a great win for our guys. We just stayed the course the whole game and the kids did a great job executing the game plan," he said.

"We knew coming in that Hudson was a very good team, well-coached and a great shooting team. We just made a few more plays down the stretch. The kids really battled there, got the stop at the end of regulation and came through in the clutch."

The Royal Knight (13-4) defense was stout in the first quarter, limiting Hudson Catholic (16-4) to nine points. But Marist came out of the gate hot, with a 5-0 run to open the scoring.

The Hawks came alive in the second quarter and took back the lead, 17-16, after an 8-0 run. Hudson's Reggie Cameron scored seven of those eight points, including a three-pointer. The two teams exchanged the lead seven more times over the next four minutes, and the Royal Knights took a 32-30 lead with two minutes remaining.

Marist went on a 9-0 run after that, to take a commanding 41-30 lead at halftime. Things didn't look much better for Hudson in the third quarter as the Royal Knights opened the second half with a 9-3 run to take a 17-point lead, 50-33, with five minutes left in the quarter. But Hudson's defense buckled down after that and they closed the quarter with a 13-5 run to trim the lead to 55-46.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Hawks had trimmed the lead to 60-56, before Cameron made another huge three-pointer to cut the lead to one. Minutes later Cameron fed Grant Ellis, who scored under the basket to put Hudson back in front.

Williams answered right back for Marist, stealing the ball near midcourt and taking it to the net himself to put his team up 62-61. With a little under a minute left to play Cameron drove to the basket and drew a foul. His first free throw attempt missed, but the next went in to tie the game. Neither team could score the game-winning basket after that and the game went to overtime.

Later with Hudson trailing 65-63, Cameron came up big again and shot another three-pointer to retake the lead, 66-65. But Josh Treadwell answered right back with a three of his own, a shot that ended up being the game-winner. After adding two free throws by James Matthews, the Royal Knights held a 70-67 lead with a few seconds left on the clock. The Hawks managed to get the ball to Cameron, who got off a shot before the buzzer that looked like it had a chance, but it bounced off the rim and Marist won.

Cameron led the Hawks in scoring with 21. He also pulled down four boards.

"That was a game we had to win in regulation," Hudson head coach Nick Mariniello said.

"I just thought we fought back as hard as we could and we just couldn't execute at certain times. We were resilient tonight but they made some big plays and we couldn't make some plays when we needed to in order to win the game."

This article was reproduced with the permission of the Jersey Journal.
First woman principal steps up at Marist by Rev. Alex Santora

She returned in the new year and made history as the first woman and layperson to become principal of the co-ed school.

And though it's technically in an acting capacity, the school was happy to make it as seamless as possible. Click here to read more.

Demetrius Terry '11

Marist High School senior, Demetrius Terry of Jersey City was chosen by the Rotary Club of Bayonne as student of the month for December.

"When Mr. Taormina, Director of Institutional Advancement told me that I was chosen as the Rotary student of the Month, I was amazed and proud to be chosen," said Terry. From the first breakfast, I met many residents in the local area and conversations varied from politics to Bayonne history and information about the Rotary Club.

Demetrius has been involved in a multitude of projects that fuels his passion for politics and service. During his freshmen year at Marist, he was nominated Vice President of his class and during his next three years, became involved in Campus Ministry and Marist youth leadership programs.

When Demetrius is not participating in school activities or studying, he is involved with leadership positions within his community and civic organizations. Currently, he serves as the Interim Chairman of Hudson County Teenage Republicans, President/Founder of YouthInspire, Vice President of Youth Ministry at Good News Bible Mission Church, and Vice President of Youth Usher board.

In addition, he has assisted with the following political campaigns: Chris Christie for Governor, Leonard Lance for Congress, Henrietta Dwyer for Congress, Mark Smith for Mayor and Barack Obama for President.

It is not surprising that Demetrius aspires to major in Political Science and minor in Business Administration next year. Currently, he has been accepted to Centenary College and is awaiting decisions from Seton Hall University, Ramapo College, Stockton State, Hofstra University, American University and Pace University.

"Demetrius is an amazing and wonderful young man. He makes us proud and has a very bright future," said Alice Miesnik, Principal.

Marist Students Get a Look at the Real World

Pictured is Andrea Andujar'01 speaking to students about a career in the
field of business. Marist teacher, Jeremy Kay looks on.

Marist High School recently conducted its annual Career Day for Juniors and Seniors. This event enables each student to learn about the different careers without having to leave school grounds. Members of the community and eleven Marist alumni presented their careers in seminar style. The students were able to interact personally with each speaker.

Speakers presented the particulars of their careers on health care, counseling, fashion, business, entertainment, entrepreneurship, culinary, law, criminal justice, architecture, sports management, engineering, film, firefighting, and journalism. Each speaker discussed qualifications for each career, as well as the personal qualities such as strong work ethic and perseverance needed for success in that career. Each speaker shared a little of his or her personal story.

Catherine Weening, a junior, said, "By talking to someone in the field of journalism, I realized that there are actions I can take now to prepare my career, such as practicing my writing skills. Planning for a career is not just something college students should do." Br. Don Neary, principal, commented, "We are grateful for the generosity of all the professionals who gave their time to speak to our students. Career Day is a very integral part of our educational program and our guest speakers add a special dimension to our efforts in the classroom."

Lady Knights Volleyball Helps Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

Coach Jeremy Kay and the Lady Knights
Volleyball Team

By the time October rolls around and summer is at a close, autumn starts to show its true colors. The leaves change from green to red to those yellow-browns. But inside Marist High School, there's one more shade that can't be found on the trees this time of year: PINK! Since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Marist is showing their support. Our Girl's Volleyball team promoted this cause under the leadership of Head Coach Jeremy Kay. The athletes sold pink ribbons to the entire school and wore pink wristbands and socks for their game. All money raised by the team was donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer. Mr. Kay came up with the idea. "I have no connection to anyone who suffers from breast cancer," Kay stated, "But, I'm an exception. Breast cancer affects about 1 in every 8 women in the US." He believes that coaching a girls' sports team gives him both an incentive and an outlet to promote the cause. Of course, the athletes were thrilled about the idea as well. One team captain stated, "I've always wanted to do the famous walk for breast cancer, I just never got the chance. This is a great alternative to raise money and do something good for people suffering from this disease." Others players also felt that they "hope this becomes a regular event" for you can never raise too much money for this cause.

But the day wasn't just about the players. Many spectators, students and adults alike, loved the idea of supporting this great cause. "At this age, where not many of us are directly connected to this disease, it's great to be aware and do all we can to help," said one student spectator. A total of just over $300 was raised to donate, including money raised from Marist High School's dress down day for the cure. The event was co-sponsored by Ms. D'Alessio and the students in Medquest, a Marist program designed to provide a specific curriculum for students interested in medical careers. Although the Lady Knights did not win the game against St. Anthony's, the cause still stands. Win or lose, there is dedication and commitment to raising money to find a cure here at Marist.

Thirty students from all over the country worked on daily projects, and were introduced to different types of engineering. Roger’s favorite activity was making a solar oven and using it to cook smores. The group also took a trip to a military fort and saw top secret military engineering projects.

In July, Roger was selected among a competitive pool of students to attend the Governor’s School of the Environment at the Richard Stockton College of N.J. Only forty-eight students were accepted into this program. Students were divided into four groups: writing, politics, land management, and back to nature. Roger was in the Ba To Na group, which was back to nature. His group explored different eco-systems: beaches, pine barrens and marshes. They collected data and learned to identify various plant and life forms. The highlight of this program for Roger was a 12 mile hike through the Bog Iron Rivers in the pine barrens and a kyacking trip.

In August, Roger flew out of the state again to Huntsville, Alabama in order to attend Space Camp for six days. After they wrote an essay, the Inner City Scholarship fund chose six students from the Archdiocese of Newark. Plane fare, accommodations and the program were paid for by the organization.

Roger found this experience “amazing”. There were around 400 people from the ages of 5-18 who came from all over the world. Students were grouped by age and Roger made friends with teenagers from Morocco, India and China. Every day there were simulated NASA missions. The camp ended with a six hour mission that divided the group into mission control, the space station and the orbiter ship. These units had to work together to solve problems with simulated scenarios. To simulate no gravity, Roger’s group called “Tiesenhousen” went scuba diving to 25 ft. The group played soccer with a 100 lb. boulder that only weighed an ounce under water.

Roger felt he not only experienced the activities of each program but he made friends with a new group of people from many cultures. He experienced dorm life and learned how to handle flying along with the unexpected pitfalls of connecting flights. Roger feels he certainly had a memorable and life changing summer.

Walk-a-Thon 2010

Marist High School will hold its annual Walk-A-Thon on Friday, October 8th. This is the first of two mandatory fundraisers that the students will participate in this school year. This year the funds raised will be used to enhance the front of the school and purchase an electronic information sign.

Students will ask others to sponsor them, underwriting their commitment to a 5K walk. Each student is asked to obtain at least $70 in sponsorships from neighbors, friends, relatives and local merchants. The Walk-a-Thon provides an opportunity for others beyond the immediate family to help families meet the cost of a Marist education. In addition, contributions to a fundraiser are generally tax-deductible, unlike tuition payments.

The first year-level that reaches 100% of their goal will receive 100 points in the year-long Marist Spirit Competition that will award a free day trip to the winning year-level class. The second year-level that reaches 100% of their goal will receive 50 points and the third year-level that reaches 100% of their goal will receive 25 points. Any homeroom with 80% participation will earn Wednesday, November 24th as a holiday!

To learn more about the Walk-a-Thon, click here.

Marist Student Journeys to the Dominican Republic

While many young people spend the lazy days of summer going to the pool, the park, or the shore, Jon Candelaria’11 of Marist High School spent most of his August in the poverty-filled neighborhood of Santiago, Dominican Republic. Jon and 31 other young people journeyed to the island for a humanitarian mission trip.

Though the temperatures were steady in the upper 90’s, Jon whole-heartedly worked with his group on completing a foundation for a new church in Cienfuegos. As the foundation was being completed, a few members of the group began a Vacation Bible School for the children of the community. They taught the children about God, how to speak some English, sing, and the importance of personal hygiene and good behavior.

When Jon was asked about his experience this summer, he replied, “Although the work is not complete, one this is for sure: by God’s grace, each of us was able to touch the lives of the people of the Dominican Republic. For that, I can say that the trip was truly successful.”
