Marist High School Seniors Attend Summer Enrichment Programs

This summer, several Marist High School students attended enrichment programs. “Marist students never stop learning and many have a strong will to succeed”, said Br. Steve Schlitte, Principal.

Kelvin Davis, Brittany Walker and Jalissa Boykin attended the People to People Student Ambassador Program in China which was founded by President Eisenhower in 1956. While in China, the students had the opportunity to visit Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hong Kong. “China was a place that I will never forget”, said Brittany Walker. “I was honored to represent Marist High School and my country during my visit”, continued Walker.  Jalissa Boykin added, “I really loved China; the experience was great and I am looking forward to taking another trip there”.

Kevin Scarpa and Ajaumu Offord attended the New Jersey City University High School Summer Scholars Program on Diversity. The American Conference on Diversity agreed to sponsor scholarships and for five weeks they participated in a class that was made up of university students and high school students. They read essays, participated in contests, and worked on projects and assignments that dealt with a wide range of topics including racism, sexism, homophobia, diversity and cultural similarities and differences.
“I learned a lot but had great fun as well”, commented Kevin Scarpa. Scarpa continued, “It was an excellent experience and it was never boring. It was a good way to meet new people, and get a nice preview to college.”

Lauren Lenzo spent one week at the intensive training program Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). This program enables talented young people such as Lauren to debate issues of professional responsibility and human relations, improve leadership and communication skills, learn about businesses and institutions, while having fun and meeting friends. Lauren stated, “The experience that had the most impact on me was the trust exercises. “ I learned so much about trusting others after that week, offered Lauren Lenzo.

“Attending RYLA was one of the best weeks of my life! I met so many genuine people, and learned so many things about myself and others. I am truly thankful for this life changing experience”, conluded Lenzo. In addition, to her experience with RYLA, Lauren also worked as a peer counselor at the Marist Brothers Retreat Center in Esopus, NY for part of the summer.
