Marist Teacher to Visit Japan This Summer

Mr. Tom Murphy will be spending three weeks in Japan this summer.

The History Department Chairman at Marist High School, Mr. Thomas Murphy, is one of ten teachers chosen by the Japan Society of New York to spend three weeks in Japan this summer.  Murphy will visit historic Kyoto and Nara as well as Tokyo and Hiroshima.  In addition to attending classes taught by Shinto priests and Buddhist monks, he will visit Japanese schools where he will observe the educational methods used in Japan as well as interact with educators and students.  In Hiroshima, Murphy will meet with survivors of the atomic bomb.  A special highlight of the trip will be a week residing with a Japanese family in the city of Obu.

When informed of the award, Murphy stated:  “This award is for Marist High School.  Japan Society was very impressed with the achievements of our students in the nationwide Korean Essay Contest which was sponsored by the KSCPP and the Chinese Cultural Contest sponsored by Seton Hall University.  In addition, nearly one hundred students have broadened their horizons by taking the Marist Asian Studies Course over the last three years.  This is their award.  I am honored to be their representative in Japan this summer.”  Murphy added:  “I am very fortunate to teach in a school where the Administration encourages and supports creativity and innovation in the classroom.  None of these activities would exist without that support.”
