Marist High School students attended the Lead for Diversity Conference held at the Pocono Environmental Education Center in Pennsylvania. This leadership program prepares student delegates to make decisions based on an appreciation of the vast diversity in New Jersey. According to the American Conference on Diversity, Lead for Diversity is a yearlong process of challenge, growth, and impact for sophomores, juniors and seniors from high schools throughout the state of New Jersey.
The experience begins with a six-day residential program each summer that allows student delegates to break barriers, deal with biased behavior and develop an Action Plan to reduce prejudice in their own communities. “This experience was an amazing opportunity to learn more about equality”, said Amro Elhalim, a junior at Marist.
After the Conference, students will better understand how stereotypes, bigotry, and bias impact negatively on their schools and provide them with tools to develop their own student-led Action Plans. Students return to their schools with the ability to shape a community based on inclusion, respect and understanding.
