Demetrius Terry
Marist High School junior, Demetrius Terry, recently attended the Martin Luther King Youth Conference in Medford, NJ. The overall goal of the Martin Luther King Youth program is to allow high school students to become effective leaders for change on issues of violence, prejudice, and discrimination.
The first phase of the conference took place last August and dealt with the topics of diversity and leadership. Demetrius added, “The first phase was very empowering and I learned a lot.” I especially enjoyed meeting youth throughout the state of New Jersey, who have now become my close friends.” The second phase of the program was held on December 11-13 and dealt with themes such as Handling Conflict, Trust, Helping Others, and Building Community. “I learned that everyone in life needs a helping hand from time to time and how many people in today’s society mask and cover their real person because they are afraid of what others will think about them.”
After the conference, students understand how stereotypes, bigotry and bias impact negatively on society. Students return to their respective schools with the ability to shape a community based on inclusion, respect and understanding.
Demetrius Terry is the President of Youth2Inspire, an uprising non-profit organization which seeks to help youth in urban areas. In the Spring of 2010, Demetrius will become a Peer Advisor for the next Martin Luther King Youth Conference.
