Marist High School Freshmen Attend Orientation

Mr. Carbone '94, Asst. Principal for Students, addresses a group of freshmen in the cafeteria

Marist High School conducted a two day orientation for its freshman class on August 25 and 26. All members of the class were required to attend these two days conducted by Mr. Craig Carbone, Assistant Principal for Students, as well as Faculty and Senior Peer Counselors.  The purpose of the orientation according to Mr. Carbone was to “enable our freshman to hit the ground running” when classes began full time after Labor Day.

During these days, teachers were introduced to their teachers, learned the layout of the building, took identification card pictures and participated in classes that were specifically designed to enable them to be successful in their freshman year. Some of the classes in which they participated included Study Skills, the Marist Code of Conduct, Marist Etiquette, Managing Stress, Guidance and Marist Values.

The freshmen were taught how the Marist values of Respect, Responsibility, Professional Behavior, Perseverance and Honesty not only will help them be successful in high school, but also in life. The students were taught the behaviors related to the values that will enable them to manage their emotions, make good ethical decisions, develop positive relationships, and avoid negative behavior. In addition, students participated in community building activities such as the annual field day. Throughout the days, freshmen students were assisted by Senior Peer Counselors, who acted as big brothers and sisters to Marists’ newest students. These same Peer Counselors will meet weekly with groups of 10 freshmen on a weekly basis during the first quarter of the year to help them continue their adjustment to high school life.

“I am really proud of our Senior Peer Counselors who provided excellent leadership and were great role models for our freshmen during orientation,” commented Mr. Carbone. Bro. Steve Schlitte, Principal said, “By all accounts, these orientation days were excellent. Our freshmen began school feeling secure and ready to work. We’ve had a great beginning, and we expect to have a great year!”
