Coach Bill DeFazio will be honored as the 2008 St. Marcellin Champagnat Service Award Honoree at Marist High School’s 14th Annual Blue & Gold Alumni Golf Classic on June 9th at the Colonia Country Club.

In a career spanning 29 years, seventeen at Marist following twelve at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, Bill has well over 560 combined victories. He shares this record with only ten other scholastic girls coaches. He remains the only coach to capture a state championship at two different programs: the 2001 Lady Royal Knights and the 1984 Friars Parochial B State title winning squads.

During his Marist tenure, Bill has coached the Lady Royal Knights to six Hudson County regular season championships, three Hudson County HCIAA titles, three Non-Public North Parochial B titles and the 2001 Parochial B State title.

Bill has coached twelve Division players who went on to Division 1 colleges on full scholarships. His teams have been in New Jersey’s top twenty in 20 of his 29 years in coaching. In 2005 he was inducted into the Hudson County Hall of Fame, and into the New Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006. His teams continue to be a dominant force having recently captured the  2007-2008 NJSIAA North Parochial B State Championship.

A U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, Bill is married to Alice, herself no stranger to girl’s basketball, now Athletic Director at New Jersey City University. Bill has two daughters, Melissa and Stacy, and four grandsons.
