Peer Counseling Program (1.25 credits)
Marist High School will train a select group of seniors to become Peer Counselors for the freshmen. If you are accepted into this program, you will work with the Freshmen during their orientation in August and once a week for the first 8-10 weeks of school. Because this program will require that you miss one class per week, it is important that students who volunteer are responsible enough to make up classwork and homework that is missed. A follow-up meeting will be held with the moderators every Tuesday from 7:45-8:30. This meeting is mandatory. The training program, which will take place in August, is also mandatory. A letter of intent, among other application procedures, is required.
Independent Study (Semester Course for 2.50 credits)
In order to enable its students to become independent, life-long learners, and to develop the diverse interests of its students, Marist High School offers select applicants an opportunity to undertake independent study for credit. The student, in conjunction with a teacher mentor, may select a topic that:
- Explores an area of study not already provided by the standard curriculum;
- Investigates, in greater depth, a topic or issue previously raised in a course the student has already taken.
Student benefits, in addition to gaining knowledge, will include developing the skills required to work independently, working closely with an individual faculty member at an advanced level, and learning how to design a course of study and successfully complete it. Requirements include keeping a daily log, a weekly meeting with the faculty mentor, a research paper, and a final presentation.
Online Courses
College Level(5.00 credits) or High School Level (2.50 credits): In this innovative program, juniors and seniors enroll to take courses on-line through one of two different organizations: Center for Distance Learning and Independent Study, which is affiliated with the University of Missouri. Students are assigned one period a day for one semester to work on their coursework. The expense for books and tuition, which comes to approximately $200 for high school courses and $500 for college courses, is the responsibility of the student. This is an opportunity to enter the fascinating world of on-line learning, the way of the future, and in the case of college courses, to earn college credit. Choice of courses depend on offerings. Some courses taken by Marist students in the past include Statistics, Japanese, Mythology, Residential Landscape Design, Women’s Voices in American Literature, and Media and Communication.

Students who enroll in on-line courses will be expected to substantiate their ability to have worked independently in the past. One of the great benefits of the program is the opportunity to enroll in a course that is not presently offered at Marist High School. |
